Physical activity is one of the most important elements of health and its benefits are endless. Exercise can improve your mood, keep you fit, and even reduce your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Start your journey to health by creating your perfect workout plan.
Step 1 - Talk to your doctor.
This is the most important step in creating an exercise plan. Share your health goals with your doctor and see what they suggest. You may have conditions that require you to avoid certain activities. Your doctor can make sure you are physically ready to participate in an exercise plan. Step 2 - Choose your favorite aerobic activity.
Aerobic activities work the heart and lungs. Aerobic exercise improves circulation and can help control blood pressure and reduce stress. Types of aerobic activities include running, walking, biking, dancing, swimming, tennis, racquetball, kickboxing, and basketball. Choose your favorite activities from those recommended by your doctor to get your heart pumping.
Step 3: Choose your favorite strengthening activities.
In addition to aerobic conditioning, building muscle is important. Muscle-building activities include yoga, weightlifting, Pilates, barre, rock climbing, push-ups, sit-ups, and even gardening and yard work. Choose your favorite activities from the activities recommended by your doctor. You can mix it up to train different muscle groups and keep the exercise interesting.
Step 4: Plan it.
If you're just starting out, take it easy. Experts recommend at least 30 minutes of exercise a day or most days of the week and at least two types of physical activity twice a week to cover your aerobic and muscular fitness. You can even track your progress, how you feel after each workout and get tips for your next activity. Remember to allow time to warm up and stretch before your activity and cool down afterwards. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and gear and stay hydrated.
If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, joint or bone problems, or dizziness at the beginning of your exercise plan, see your doctor right away.Same day or next day appointmentsare available from Baylor St. Luke's Medical Group.
