best radiator
The radiator in the SWMBO S70 just released a ton of coolant all over the driveway.
When looking at the various engine coefficient websites, the choices seem to be the £125 Nissens, the £85 EIS or the £75 Starline.
Nissens is speaking common sense, but are EIS products worth considering? As far as I can tell, it's a German manufacturer, and the name seems to show up on various MB/BMW/Porsche owner websites.
Has anyone also tried replacing the p1 70 series works themselves? A car is a car, so an oil cooler is built into the operation. Could it be as simple as what I just did on my old S90, or is it more complicated than that?
Any hints and suggestions are welcome.
SWMBO loves the car and even though it is old and tired and has been in the family for almost 20 years, she really wants to keep it. I think she feels the same way about me!
Thanks

Nissan is fine.
About 4-5 years ago I replaced the heatsink on a C70 with 1 and it's been perfect since then.
Since mine is a manual, all I have to do is use the plug where the auto line is.
As for convenience, I'm not sure since I replaced the do88's intercooler at the same time and kept the AC system. Doing it yourself is a little tricky, but doable. I worked on a jet a few years ago so I'm used to pain in the butt so it's like making you wish you had 3 arms lol.
have fun.

As Spawned66 said, doing it yourself is doable, albeit a bit cumbersome. The possibility to hang the work bag from above makes life easier.
Your biggest problem is successfully removing the two bolts that hold the wheel to the bracket, these bolts have lock nuts that usually loosen and start spinning when you remove the bolts. Before removing the two screws from above, try to clear the thread length by opening and closing the corresponding nut while applying penetrant.
Another problem you may have is removing transmission lines where they start running. The green nylon/plastic tabs (maybe you have metal caps?) will become brittle over time, so it's advisable to keep them on hand for reassembly.
Genuine Volvo working production on my C70 (car) '05Valeo.New aftermarket replacement job I can't remember the name but I think it was made in Spain and it was leaking where the little top hose goes back to the expansion tank so I had to fix the threads where it connects to the job :speech- The Smiley-5 does not come equipped with a bottom drain valve.
By all accounts, after reading the reviews here, the Nissens wheels are well made.

Alcoves are fine. I replaced the original on my V40 with a Nissens one 9 years ago and everything is still fine.

Thank you everyone
I just watched Robert's DIY video. I think this might be a bit out of my scope. Obviously, work is going down, so the headstock is going up. I'm not very dexterous enough to work under the car like Robert described, maybe 20 years ago, but not now!
For someone with the right facilities and tools, this can be a 3 hour job.
Also, the car is 25 years old and I'm pretty sure none of the bolts, clamps, and connectors are in top shape.
Using my old S90 was a breeze by comparison. There's more room to work, and really all you have to do is disconnect and remove the fan assembly, disconnect the coolant hose and transmission fluid line, and jack it up. More room to work under the hood of a rear-wheel-drive Volvo!
Luckily we don't have the S90 for sale yet (see my post on the 900 series forum for sale), so the lady can use it until I sort the S70.
I guess I should acknowledge my limitations and leave it to the professionals. We were lucky that the Dyrdals from York were 20 minutes away so I think we'll give them a call tomorrow immediately!
I leave the job choice up to them. We got an S70 from them 20 years ago, my daughter's car was from them 2 years ago and I got my "new" V70 from them last week. I know they will do a good job.
Thanks again for your answers and suggestions. Some things are best left to the professionals, and I think this is one of them!

Wot Baffler said, specifically about the two main set bolts.
Very doable at home, I've had no problem making it myself, and although I took it from above, it seems to be the easiest way by far. If you're doing it in the garage, you can tie a rope to something in the ceiling to lift it, which is what I did. Have spare radiator hose clamps and o-rings ready, available from Volvo, one of the oil cooler hoses will come off and get a new one, radiator leaks are the least of the problems, sudden oil leaks can be Scrap the engine or transmission.

I replaced work on a P1 V70 with a Nissens a few years ago. I can't say I've heard of the other brands you mention, so I can't comment on them, but Nissens is pretty good and I haven't had any problems. My car has a manual transmission so I don't have a problem with the transmission oil cooler tube, otherwise I found it to be a very simple job and then jacked up my car so no need to jack up the front of the car.

Well, I took out the old cooler from the S70 tonight, prompted by a comment here.
Everything was going great until I found the second of the two large screws that hold the radiator to the car. After hours of PlusGas and slaughter, he finally gave up. That's a shame, because everything else is actually pretty simple.
Basically, the car is sitting in the garage without a refrigerator, waiting for me to order a new one. I think I'll go with Nissens - it's a bit pricey, but the brand has a good reputation.
Thanks for the replies everyone - not as hard as I feared, of course I still need to get everything back...

Well done Jack! My golden rule - tackle the heaviest nuts/bolts first and make the others a walk in the park.
Last time I checked Volvo was asking 300+ plus a thing called VAT so I went to the aftermarket...sorry didn't find Nissen in time.
captain Jack | May 28, 2023 at 11:27 am |
mission completed!
New pieces from Nissens arrived yesterday and everything is back to normal. In addition to the radiator, all new hose clamps were used. The retaining nut came loose so I had to thread the nut and bolt through one of the two support brackets, but I managed to salvage the rubber retaining bushing so everything is back to normal and working as expected from the Volvo.
One thing I'm sure of is that the two ATF fluid connector retaining rings (steel not plastic) have hose clamps to keep them in place. Also, while some transmission fluid was lost, it wasn't enough to top it up. This replicates the experience of doing the same job on my old S90 a few weeks ago. Lost some moisture, but not enough to matter.
To be fair, this was much easier than Robert's DIY looked, although I think I got lucky and all but a dozen were easily undone. I fully understand that it's a very difficult job if multiple couplings are rusted and stuck. Robert is also working on turbo cars, and our S70 has a 2.5 10v n/a motor, so that might make things a little easier.
The radiator itself is best lowered for removal and replacement by maneuvering from below, but the car doesn't need to be raised to do this. Also, if you temporarily cable the A/C condenser to the plastic crossbar, things get a lot easier.
But overall it was a good job and I think I saved about £300 in labor costs. The Euro Car Parts total cost was £122 for the wheels and £28 for new antifreeze and hose clamps. So, for £150, the old lady hits the road again.
Thank you for your concern and encouragement.
cheers
