Sedentary behavior is any waking behavior characterized by an energy expenditure of ≤ 1.5 metabolic equivalents (METs) while sitting, lying down, or lying down.In general, this means that when a person sits or lies down, they are exhibiting sedentary behavior. Common sedentary behaviors include watching television, playing video games, using the computer (collectively referred to as "screen time"), driving, and reading.

Why do we care about sedentary behavior?
Recent evidence suggests that a high level of sedentary lifestyle negatively affects health independently of other factors, such as body weight, diet, and physical activity. For example,a 12 year courseof 17,000 Canadian adults found that those who sat the longest were 50% more likely to die during follow-up than those who sat the least, even after accounting for age, smoking, and physical activity. In light of these and other findings, researchers are now studying the effects of physical inactivity on health in a variety of academic fields, including epidemiology, public health, psychology, ergonomics, engineering, and physiology.
